Every year Jameson Cult Film Club hosts a party designed for film geeks or for those who love a good time hanging out with film geeks and can (or not) catch that film reference midst conversation. It is always less awkward and makes for a good banter if one gets the movie reference. You know, like getting the punchline to a joke. This insanely immersive experience draws inspiration from a cult film to create total immersion in its universe. Last year it was Pulp Fiction. The year before it was Fight Club. Before that, Alien. I have been to two of the Jameson Cult Film Club parties and I have missed the other two, not by choice. This year, I made it a point to be in attendance and in character. So was everybody else. There was a sea of all black everything outfits.
Secret agent were serving some mean vosho moves whilst some sick Gqom beats vibrated from the sound system. That was epic!
This year’s Jameson Cult Film Club theme was The Matrix. This 1999 fantasy science fiction film created by The Wachowskis was an obvious choice for the Cult Film Club party because, at its core, it’s about living more – a philosophy Jameson says it has backed since 1780. No lies were detected here.
Jameson Cult Film Club has been encouraging obsessive-compulsive behaviour amongst fanatical moviegoers since 2011. It brings cult films to fans around the world with an immersive, interactive, and action-packed film experience like no other. These events go beyond ordinary screenings and place the audience in the heart of the action with characters from the movie, live theatre and special effects timed perfectly with the on-screen action. I liked how they localized some aspects of the party last night using characters from the movie. Like the ‘secret agents’ in black suits, black glasses and earpiece serving some mean vosho and gwaragwara moves within a circle. Whilst some sick Gqom beat vibrated from the sound system. That was epic! However, I think one of the highlights from last night was when the DJ played Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’. We completely lost it. I had my arm up filming the epicness. Someone had their shirt off and swinging it in the air, it hit my smartphone and it flew across the room. Luckily I found it, yeap it was that lit.
Some of the people I spoke to yesterday who clearly had not been to one of the Jameson Cult Film Club parties before were expecting a screening of the movie. Not aware that they were in the heart of the action and the ‘movie set’. Perhaps they had not seen the movie The Matrix before, it would explain how they missed all the references and set design of the venue drawn from the movie. Like I said, the party is for the movie geeks and for those who love a good time hanging out with film geeks and can (or not) catch that film reference midst conversation

The #JamesonMatrix took place last night in Joburg and will be hosted in Cape Town on 16 November 2017. You might want to call a friend or make a friend and get yourself that invite, you do not want to miss this one!
