In the philosophical words of Cady: “In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it.”
Only in my reality. Sometime once a year one find themselves having to come up with a look that is strong for dinner and can hold its own at a themed party. Hard to guess, but strong enough to make for a compelling case once someone gets it or when you ultimately have to tell who you came as to the Halloween party. That the other fun part of a themed party cracking who is who or what, when. You have to tap in to your pop culture archives and dig deep for the reference.
I went to the Annual 7B Halloween House Party, as the 13th look from TN Collectiv’s SS19 fashion show. I told you it was a goodie. No, I did not go as myself and yes, I did make an effort – bitch whatchu take me for.
Straight after the ATJ 2018 Dinner and Discourse. Me and some of the guests from the dinner headed to the party. Ntando Ngewnya of NtadoXV went as Steve Jobs – the eyewear and turtleneck were an obvious clue and Thato Mmereki as Madiba in Presidential Shirt.
Arrived at the height of the party. How do we know that? We shared a lift with security who was obviously attending to noise levels complaints. As we stepped out the lift, Inge Wulf was stepping in, retiring home. The reference was unmistakable. We love a good fashion moment. She is a fashion girl through and through. She nailed the iconic white swan dress by Marjan Pejoski which was worn by the Icelandic artist Björk at the 73rd Academy Awards on 25 March 2001.
Apartment 7B was a euphoric site and bitches were serving leuwks, wigs layed, bodies snatched, faces beat, mountains conquered and those who made minimal effort were gagged. Toxic by Britney Spears was blaring from the speaker by the aux cable DJ setup. “Baby, can’t you see I’m calling, a guy like you should wear a warning, it’s dangerous I’m falling…” Miss Spears is irresistible.
Aya and Andrew arrived as Thembi Seete and Lebo Mathosa (It’s About Time Music Video), Siya as JLo (more of a JHo) in the iconic green Versace silk chiffon dress circa 2000 serving major Rich BItch Energy, Roger, Sandiblouse and Anita as the Powerpuff Sluts, Rampepe as Day’s of Our Lives’ Marlena Evans possessed character, Sam as Maleficent, Rami as Rihanna – causing havoc in denim thongs – ‘Pour it Up’ music video.
One other great noticeable moment was Mangi Mbileni as one of the American political party Black Panther members. His look juxtaposed by Lonwabo Gaushe who came as Marvel Comics’s fantasy/science fiction in a Black Panther superhero suit. The second look that made me glee after cracking it was the Riky Rick’s 24th South African Music Awards leuwk by CHULAAP. As expected there were some superheroes stuff and highly flammable plastic wigs haphazardly giving more rounds than a Greyhound during holiday seasons.
In its third installment, 7B Halloween party hosted by Ayabonga and Andrew Tlou is the one. Try to secure your invite for 2019 sooner than later. The party had all the right elements that make for a perfect house party. All details considered and checked, tight guest list, a theme honoured by guests, inclusivity, intersectionality, music, some salacious tidbits here and there and finally security shutting that shit down whilst at its highest. Everything!
